The sword can be interchangeable with the athame and is a masculine symbol; when a female witch straps on a sword, she can assume a male role in the ritual.  The sword is a commanding tool; more formal and imposing than the athame so adds gravity to an announcement or occasion.  The only time the sword is used for cutting is to cut a hand fasting cake.
